Third Annual Equal Postsecondary Educational Opportunity Status Report for the Period July 1, 1982-September 1983.
Maryland State Board for Higher Education, Annapolis.
The 1982-1983 report of the postsecondary desegregation progress in Maryland is presented. The goals of the 1980 plan and the status of attainment of the goals are discussed. Data are presented on enrollments, degrees granted, employment, and governing boards. For each state institution, a chart provides information on goals and recommendations, current activities, and proposed activities. Highlights on the progress include: the college entering rate for black high school graduates continued to be slightly higher than that of white high school graduates; after a 4-year decline in the percentage of black undergraduate students, there was a slight increase to 20.7 percent in 1983; the proportion of black graduate students in all institutions continued to decline in 1983; the proportion of blacks among first-professional fields of law, medicine, and dentistry was up from 1982; for the first time the University of Maryland at College Park attained the 1985 goal of 10 percent for black first-time freshmen, and among the historically-black institutions, Coppin DSttate College has met the 1985 freshmen goal. The state has achieved 14 of the 33 goals of the 1980 plan ahead of the target date, and most of the remaining goals have been partially met. The first part of the annual institutional report is appended. (SW)
