Presuming that rhetorical discourse comes into existence as a response to a situation in the same sense that an answer comes into existence in response to a question, or a solution in response to a problem, then Mexico is fertile ground for rhetoric and the study of rhetoric. Mexico is a country under fire. Economic and political problems threaten the security and peace of the Mexican nation. The exigencies mirror an obviously rhetorical situation. Mexican rhetoric has Indian, Spanish, technological, and Anglo influences that are as apparent in the streets as they are in the histories and curricula. In addition, all of the rhetoric is in response to the exigencies the people of Mexico face. Official Mexican rhetoric is made up of those addresses that move through the channels and processes of power. Presidential, radio, television, newspaper, and magazine addresses are formal forms. There is also a street rhetoric comprised of unofficial drawings on public walls, rumor, and rock and roll. The rhetorical practices of Mexico warrant further examination, and can be portrayed by focusing on any number of examples of official and street rhetoric. (HOD)
