Vocational Special Needs Instructional Strategies Project.
Posey, Virginia; Johnson, Margaret
This handbook for vocational educators reviews four instructional strategies that may be used in a vocational classroom to accommodate the special needs of the handicapped and/or disadvantaged student. The strategies are task analysis, mapping, flowcharting, and peer tutoring. For each strategy, examples are given that incorporate the three distinct components of competency-based instruction: performance objectives, learning activities, and criterion-referenced activities. An introduction is followed by a description of the project that discusses learning strategies and the use of these strategies to meet individual differences and promote integration. Each of the next four chapters focuses on one of the strategies. The strategy is first described, and examples are given of how the strategy can be used in vocational content areas. Implementation of the strategy and evaluation to determine its effectiveness (student progress) are then discussed. A section on conclusions cites some advantages of the use of the strategy. A list of references is appended. (YLB)
