Fifteenth Annual Evaluation Report on Vocational Education in Virginia 1983-84.
Virginia State Advisory Council on Vocational Education, Blacksburg.
This 1983-84 annual report on vocational education in Virginia is organized under four major categories: (1) recommendations for improving the state's vocational education programs, services, and activities; (2) the extent to which previous recommendations have received consideration; (3) review of the vocational education annual program plan provisions; and (4) review of service to people and their needs. The evaluations contained in the report resulted from data obtained from records and reports from agencies, interviews, public meetings, participation of Council members and staff in vocational activities and programs throughout the year, as well as evaluative studies and previous evaluations made by the Advisory Council. Recommendations for improving the state's vocational education programs include the establishment of local advisory councils, increasing efforts to keep potential dropouts in school, revision of minimum competency standards, review of the criteria used to evaluate the effectiveness of vocational education, and expansion of the advanced studies diploma program to allow greater participation by students who wish to concentrate on fine arts or vocational education. An appendix to the report gives statistics on current and expected job openings in various occupations in Virginia, various comparisons of 1982-83 high school graduates, and community college enrollments.
