Means of Instruction Variables. Comparative Study of Phase IV IGE Evaluation Project. Phase IV Project Paper, 80-8.
Nerenz, Anne G.; Webb, Norman L.
This is one of a series of reports which provide definitions of and descriptive data on the variables used in the Comparative Study of Phase IV of the Individually Guided Education (IEG) Evaluation Project. Phase IV investigated three curriculum programs specifically designed to be compatible with instructional programming for the individual student: (1) the Wisconsin Design for Reading Skills Development (WDRSD); (2) Developing Mathematical Processes (DMP); and (3) Prereading Skills (PRS). Information on instructional methods and pupil outcomes for grades 2 and 5 was collected from achievement monitoring and domain referenced tests, teacher logs, and classroom observations. This paper focuses on the Means of Instruction variables, and includes data from two sources: classroom observations (observed time) and teacher logs (allocated time). The Means of Instruction variables include: (1) group size (individual, small, and large); (2) instructional materials (paper/pencil, manipulations/games, printed materials, WDRSD, other text or curriculum series, teacher-made materials, and other materials); and (3) interactions (student to teacher and teacher to student). Tables present average numbers of hours and percentage of observed time for the Means of Instruction variables by grade for the three types of schools: IGE/WDRSD; (IGE/Non-WDRSD; and Non-IGE/WDRSD.
