A Profile of Instructional Personnel in New York State Postsecondary Occupational Education.
Winter, Gene M.; Fadale, LaVerna M.
A study was conducted to develop a demographic and inservice education needs profile of faculty and administrators in New York State two-year college occupational education programs. Surveys were administered to all full-time occupational faculty at 55 two-year colleges, soliciting demographic information, educational history, experiential background, inservice needs, and career plans. In addition, questionnaires were administered to occupational education chairpersons and administrators at these institutions, seeking information on faculty recruitment needs and practices, in addition to demographic characteristics and inservice education needs. Study findings, based on responses from 1,922 faculty members, 274 chairpersons, and 64 central administrators, included the following: (1) 61% of the faculty and over 70% of the administrators and chairpersons were male; (2) 67% of the faculty held a masters degree; (3) over 40% of the chairpersons, but only 14% of the administrators indicated that there was no shortage of candidates for faculty positions; (4) recently employed faculty were perceived to be well prepared in subject area knowledge, and acceptably prepared in knowledge of teaching and of the two-year college student; (5) at least 80% of the faculty had participated in some type of professional development activity during the past 3 years; (6) local or regional workshops were preferred by over half of the faculty; and (7) over half of the faculty preferred a subject matter or field content focus, as compared to nearly 25% who preferred a teaching-oriented focus. The study report includes a comparison of findings with a 1975 research study and the survey instruments. (LAL)
