Expanding Options. Facilitator's Guide--Elementary Teacher Workshop.
Center for Studies of the Person, San Diego, CA.
This guide provides procedures and supporting materials for a sex equity workshop aimed at elementary school teachers. The workshop is intended to expand awareness of sexism and to increase sex-affirmative behavior in the educational environment. The guide describes content, process, and sequential learning experiences for seven sessions, plus an optional eighth session. Sessions 1 and 2 are organized to increase awareness of sexism and to provide a common vocabulary. Sessions 3 and 4 focus on the results of sex discrimination and some remedies for education. Sessions 5, 6 and 7 investigate the role of the teacher and focus on practical classroom strategies and planning for change. Included in Session 7 is an assessment of the total workshop experience. Optional Session 8, on assertiveness training, is intended to help in the development of effective change agents. In addition to session-by-session procedures and supporting materials, this guide includes mini-lectures, activity guides, handout materials for the participants (assessment instruments, activity cards, readings, and worksheets), and transparency masters.
