Physical Access in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 27.
Association of Research Libraries, Washington, DC. Office of Management Studies.
Resulting from the Association of Research Libraries' (ARL) 1975 survey on user services, this kit presents documentation on and discusses developments in physical access services--services which facilitate the actual delivery of information sources to the user--including circulation, interlibrary loan, book delivery, and new media services. As research libraries' collections have grown, users have found it increasingly difficult to locate the actual information resources they need. The growing complexity of research libraries, the recognition of various obstacles to user access, and users' expectations for timely access to information resources have combined to generate an increased concern for efficient modes of providing physical access to library materials. In addition, wider library participation in cooperative programs and the expanded scope of automated bibliographic retrieval systems provide new opportunities for improving physical access services. Development of these services in the recent past generally reflects greater control and knowledge of the status of holdings, more cooperation and interdependency among libraries in providing access, and effective utilization of computer capabilities. Prepared in 1976 and updated in 1978, this kit contains 18 documents: 5 on external user policies, 6 on interlibrary loan systems, 3 on book delivery systems, 2 on media/microform services, 1 on services for handicapped users, and 1 on obstacles to physical access.
