A Plan to Implement Six Regional Invitational Counselor Preparation Workshops. Final Report.

A project was conducted to implement six invitational counselor preparation workshops for the purpose of improving and updating counselors' skills and competencies in the areas of career development, guidance, and education. The following objectives were addressed during the project: to assess the present training practices of counselor education programs in Pennsylvania as they relate to career development, guidance, and education; to consider both credit and noncredit training approaches to update counselor competencies in these areas; to involve a variety of professionals to ensure the broadest examination of the professional development needs of vocational counselors; and to collect data for use in assessing the relevance of counselor training programs. After the project participants identified several needed changes in the pre- and inservice preparation of present and future vocational and career counselors, a network design was proposed to involve counselors from various work and educational settings in training for present and future counselors. The project participants identified a number of counseling internship and practicum sites that could be used in the preparation of vocational and career counselors and formulated several recommendations for use in providing such training.
