The personal and professional attributes, beliefs, interests, and behaviors of secondary social studies teachers were examined. Major sources of data included: a prior study which surveyed a random sample of teachers in six states; a survey of three high schools in the Rochester, New York, area; a publication of the New York State Education Department containing self-reported data supplied by teachers; and three major studies sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Findings showed that the average social studies teacher is a male in his late thirties, married with children, serious about his religion, but not very interested in further academic preparation. He is not a feminist, supports freedom-of-choice on abortions, wants the federal government to play a role in education, rejects forced busing, and supports the rights of gays. He worries about keeping his job; declining purchasing power also concerns him. He is proud of his profession, but does not support professional associations. He likes working with young people and is convinced that he is well-informed. He relies heavily on a textbook and doesn't care about educational innovations. (RM)
