Connections: Linking the Arts and Basic Curriculum.
Oklahoma State Dept. of Education, Oklahoma City.
A three-part teacher's guide outlines methods of incorporating active art education and art appreciation into the elementary curriculum. The section on Arts and Learning contains readings on art and culture, art in education, and art as active learning as well as an introduction to the guide. The Arts and Teaching section contains four groups of lessons integrating creative dance, creative drama, music, and visual arts into the elementary classroom study of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Lessons focus on self-awareness, geometrical shapes, poetry, rules, vocabulary, time concepts, letter and sound recognition, economic concepts, numbers, and colors. Each lesson includes an identification of curriculum subject concepts, appropriate grade level, and necessary materials. Lesson content is established around exploration, invention, and application stages of learning. The third section, Resources and Information, consists of specific information on the Oklahoma Arts in Education Programs, a 5-page annotated bibliography, a glossary, an index, and an evaluation instrument.
