In 1983, a study was conducted to investigate the use of instructional television in Mississippi's junior colleges. The study involved two surveys. The first was a survey of media specialists at each of the 15 junior colleges, requesting information on the types of institutional support provided, the amount of hardware and software available on campus, the kinds of usage that television had on campus, contact with the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television, and perceived needs for the effective utilization of television. In the second survey, a random sample of 450 faculty members at these institutions were asked to provide information on their use of television for instruction, utilization of the media center, factors influencing their use of instructional television, perceived needs, and personal and institutional characteristics. Study findings, based on responses from all 15 of the media specialists and 364 of the faculty members, included the following: (1) television was used for instruction on 13 of the campuses, and only 1 institution did not have television hardware available for faculty use; (2) 90% of the faculty felt that television was a valuable instructional aid, yet only 53% actually used television for instruction; (3) utilization of television was significantly related to the characteristics of the institutions in which the faculty member taught; and (4) teaching discipline was also significant to teachers' use of television.
