Examples of programs and activities at North Seattle Community College (NSCC) are used to support the argument that there is an important relationship among faculty renewal, student success, and basic learning skills that should be strengthened and promoted. First, underpinning assumptions are put forth regarding faculty renewal and faculty development, public priorities in education, the leading position of the humanities in renewal activities, and misplaced efforts in faculty development. The next sections highlight NSCC activities demonstrating the relationship among faculty renewal, student success, and basic skills, including: (1) participation in the Washington State "Revitalizing the Humanities Project"; (2) development of a writing across the curriculum project; (3) a survey of faculty regarding their assessment of students' thinking, writing, and study skills; and (4) a more formal faculty survey to identify sources of concern and frustration regarding student skills. Finally, additional reasons for tying students' success in basic learning skills with faculty renewal are provided, focusing on the national clamor for educational quality and concerns about financial support. Appended materials include copies of the faculty survey instruments, and a report to the faculty about student problems and needs based on the second survey. (HB)
