As part of a multiphased evaluation of vocational training provided by the Job Corps in fiscal year 1982, a study examined Job Corps practices for identifying high growth occupations. At least for the present, national projections are the main source of information available to Job Corps planners for use in assessing future vocational training needs. In fiscal year 1982, the Job Corps offered training in 28 of the 32 Occupational Employment Survey (OES) titles projected to grow to more than 100,000 by 1990. Considering the limitations of projected employment changes from 1980 to 1990 as indicators of occupational demand in the labor market, Job Corps training was overwhelmingly well targeted. Insofar as alignment with the national labor market is concerned, it appears that only minimal changes are justified in the Job Corps occupational training mix. Fine tuning, not wholesale redirection, is indicated by labor market considerations.
