This manual details a cooperative adult English as a Second Language (AESL)/mental health project within an Asian community. Three groups of participants are described: the ethnic Chinese adult, the AESL staff, and the mental health staff. The description of each group is followed by questions to consider in assessing clients and staff when replicating this model of systematic collaboration between two community-based organizations. The manual goes on to discuss six specific project components: planning, staff training (workshops), student awareness, referral process, intake procedure, and case conferences. Specific materials provided include a chart of project phases, summaries of the material covered in the workshops, and a student questionnaire on mental health issues. Each component is described, an evaluation of it is provided, and questions/areas for consideration when replicating this model are identified. A conclusion summarizes the advantages of community-level collaborations and the requirements for effective collaboration. (YLB)
