Intended to serve as a guide to the development of basic computer competencies for students in teacher preparation programs or as inservice training for teachers, this primarily self-instructional manual provides basic information, worksheets, computer programs, and hands-on learning activities for 16 proficiencies related to computer literacy. Orientation is toward Apple microcomputers, and, in some cases, specific software, though the exercises can be modified for other hardware and software. The following topics are covered: learning terminology, maintenance procedures, inserting disks and running programs, initializing a blank diskette, copying a diskette and a single file, writing a program in BASIC, using a printer, types of educational computer programs, class management instructional programs, evaluating software programs, programs for one grade or subject, problem solving using LOGO, using an authoring system, word processing, using a modem to access the Alaska Knowledge Base, and identifying and describing the purpose of reference materials.
