Reading to Children and Achievement.
Briechle, Claire
A study was conducted to determine whether a teacher's reading to sixth grade students on a regular basis would have a significant positive effect on their reading comprehension. Twenty students, divided into experimental and control groups, were pretested and posttested using the "Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test." During the eight-week study, the researcher read to the experimental group for 25 minutes, three times a week. During the reading, the control group worked on other activities in a separate room. The posttest results indicated a significant difference in the comprehension scores for the two groups with the experimental group showing significant gains in comprehension as a result of the treatment.
