School Health Education: A Manual for Making It Happen in Your District.
Dekray, Susan
This manual, developed by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, is intended to help concerned community members make school health education a reality. It provides suggestions on how to get people organized to take the right steps. The manual's suggestions are based on three statements. First, health education means teaching people how to take responsibility for making health choices. Second, health education needs to start early in a person's life so that good health habits become a natural part of their lifestyle. And third, health education can be done most effectively and efficiently in schools, where students, teachers, and other educational resources are available. The manual contains five sections, with section 1 providing a brief introduction. Section 2 describes how to develop a task force and decide what should be in the school health education program. Section 3 talks about who should be included in the task force and ways of asking people to participate and arranging meetings. Section 4 deals with examining existing health programs, matching community needs with your program, and giving your presentation to the school board. Section 5 contains appendices about information on Alaska's major health problems; the Alaska Department of Education's Criteria for Excellence; and a list of who to contact for more information.
