Swiss-migrant joint associations are coordinating bodies for local services/agencies dealing with migrant problems, are recognized by local authorities, implement government policies toward migrants, and are politically neutral. Membership is drawn from local authorities, educational authorities, churches, political parties, employers'/employees' associations, public services, and Swiss and migrant bodies responsible for social welfare and migrant organizations. The end purpose is social integration, and eventual assimilation, of migrants in Switzerland. Generally, joint associations try to create a climate of mutual understanding between Swiss nationals and migrants, make critical studies of the migrant situation, and try to base their approach on what migrants think and on their specific problems: school, language, and professional advancement. In Aargau, additional classes in German are given, using specially developed materials; a "homework supervision" scheme for migrant children trains Swiss or migrant mothers whose own children have been to school, to work with teachers and help children with homework; "parents' committees" aim to provide support for children and improve parents' own education; and teachers attend seminars on problems of migrant children. The Zurich joint association campaigned for greater recognition of the mother tongue; 2 hours of mother-tongue-and-culture classes were incorporated into school timetables. All cantons have brochures in the various languages spoken by the migrants explaining the school system. (MH)
