This document is designed to help secondary school health education staff, primarily teachers, identify materials and resources for planning, developing, and conducting programs for substance abuse prevention and education. The criteria used for materials selection and questions to use in adapting the materials to local needs are provided. The guide annotates materials on alcohol, tobacco, drugs, self-image and values, and general health education. Under each area, e.g., tobacco, materials are further subdivided by the population for whom they are prepared, i.e., students, adults, teachers. Student materials are divided and annotated by publications, posters, displays, and audiovisual materials. Adult materials are further divided according to interest groups, i.e., general audience, parents and pregnant women, minority groups. Posters, displays, and audiovisuals are also included in adult materials. Teacher materials are categorized by bibliographies, periodicals, references, philosophy and method, and community coordination. Drugs and self-image sections offer audiovisual materials for teachers. Addresses for distributors of listed materials, sources of current information, services and materials, and local and regional substance abuse prevention offices are listed in a separate section.
