Designed for use by students who are beginning to do research for term papers, this self-instructional library workbook presents information on the circulating and reference collections of the Madonna College Library in Livonia, Michigan. The workbook covers: (1) use of the card catalog for finding books about a specific subject and for screening books by looking at the information given on a catalog card; (2) the location of books within the library using the Dewey Decimal classification system; (3) the purpose of the library reserve room; (4) the uses and locations of major reference books, including specific encyclopedias, almanacs/yearbooks, atlases/gazeteers, dictionaries, and biographical dictionaries; (5) library special collections; (6) the use of periodicals, periodical indexes, particularly the "Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature," and compilation indexes, i.e., "Newsbank" and the "Social Issues Resource Series"; (7) the contents of the vertical file; (8) audiovisual materials in the library; and (9) suggested methods for obtaining the assistance of reference librarians. Also provided are sample catalog cards and index pages, a map of the reference collection, a pretest and posttest, exercises on using the card catalog and indexes, and answer sets for the tests and exercises.
