Ministry with the Community College: A Lutheran Perspective.
Schroeder, Phil, Ed.
Based on studies conducted by a task force of the Lutheran Council's Division of Campus Ministry and Educational Services, this booklet provides a description of the community college, a theological perspective of community college ministry, and a process by which a local parish can begin ministry in the colleges. Part 1 examines the typical community college, how it differs from other postsecondary institutions, and its value in the current educational environment. Part 2 presents two theological arguments for the Lutheran church's concern with community college ministry, which focus on the role of ministry in a learning society and the relationship of church and culture. In part 3, a five-step sequence is presented for starting or enhancing a community college ministry, which suggests ways to involve the religious and college communities and a series of joint meetings to design a Day of Conversations, define possible areas of partnership, and establish an ongoing committee. Part 4 identifies strategies for overcoming obstacles, increasing mutual trust, and providing stability to the ministry. Part 5 examines community college ministry in the areas of counseling, instruction, community services, governance, and student activities. The final section provides a bibliography and a list of resources and tools to aid in understanding community colleges and developing a campus ministry. (HB)
