Bibliographic Instruction for Undergraduates: An Example of a One-Unit Required Library Research Skills Course.
Smalley, Topsy N.
A college level, one-unit library research skills course is required of all students as part of a general education program at the State University College at Plattsburgh, New York. The course emphasizes the presentation of learning experiences within the context of two conceptual structures: principles that underlie information access systems, and the distinctive discipline contexts of research processes and their modes of access in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities. In this report, the learning objectives of the course are discussed, and teaching techniques aimed at imparting personally meaningful learning are presented and explained. Extensive appendices provide examples of course materials, including the course outline, one variation of all weekly assignments, in-class worksheets, and a number of explanatory handouts used in teaching the course. The subjects covered include Library of Congress subject classification; library collections; use of the card catalog; access to background information; fact reference sources; access to the periodical literature; researching the social sciences, the sciences and the humanities; and the development of search strategies.
