Revised training programs for health and education service providers are advocated that will result in greater integration of services to disabled children. Attention is directed to curricular and training needs of professionals serving the disabled and their families, as well as the efforts of the American Society of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP) in building alliances in advocacy for disabled children. Additional concerns include the following: roles and responsibilities of allied health professionals in serving both nondisabled and disabled individuals, major barriers to interprofessional and interagency alliances, policy recommendations of a 1982 forum on alliances in health and education, and progress in implementing and promoting the forum's recommendations. Barriers to coordination are identified that pertain to: communication problems between and among professional groups, educators, service providers, consumers, and advocates; parochialism in professional training programs and in service delivery; low priority given to interdisciplinary activity in academic institutions; financial constraints; leadership issues; and governmental and regulatory issues. Policy recommendations at the national, state, and local levels are offered regarding health/education alliances to improve services to disabled children. In addition, types of data that are needed to design quality training programs are identified. Future ASAHP's activities are also cited. Finally, criteria for quality training programs for allied health, regular education, and special education providers are outlined (e.g., design, curriculum content, trainee populations). (SEW)
