The Communication Center Program Manual.
Medcalf, Ann Wachob
This program manual describes the Communication Center at Joseph Kerr Junior High School in Sacramento County, California, which was established in 1975 to prevent student high risk behavior and to encourage positive attitudes in the school community. The philosophy of the Center, which is based on the theories of Rudolf Dreikurs, is described, and a brief description of the Center's facility and history is presented. Descriptions of staff positions (responsibilities, training, selection and recruitment) are presented for the planning team, the support team, student communicators, and others such as college interns and community volunteers. Basic program components are described including information and services, counseling (crisis, group, peer, individual, family), rumor control, human relations, staff services, role modeling, and training offered to others interested in the Center's skills and techniques. Techniques used by the Center to plan and carry out its programs are also described, i.e., a plan for efficient meetings, a problem solving model, development of the yearly action plan, and a plan for developing community support; fundraising and material acquisition suggestions are also given. Appendix A contains samples of Center forms (frequency of use report, incident report, recommendation for student communicators, peer counselor record, and group counseling sign up sheet), and Appendix B provides a list of Sacramento resources, by category, e.g., child care information, emergency services, and family and individual counseling services.
