This paper presents the evaluation of the Family Stress Program, which was designed to deliver human services and save valuable police time through intervention in police calls involving individuals and families in crisis. A brief description of the program's structure, purpose, and development, and a listing of program goals (preventing the breakdown of the family unit and increasing its coping skills; reducing the recurrence of family fights; and reducing police time spent on family fights), are presented in the initial sections. The types of social regulation calls (defined as calls to police requiring both crime control interventions and interventions in the emotional and personal needs of the crime's victim) and human service calls responded to by the Family Stress Program Team are described. Police activities and how they are enhanced by the Family Stress Team are discussed. A comparative time analysis of the social regulation and human service activities of both the police and the team during the first year of funding (May 1981-April 1982) are provided, along with 21 statistical tables illustrating the comparisons. The final section presents conclusions on the Family Stress Program's functioning for each goal established prior to the program's implementation. In addition, specific recommendations related to each goal are presented; the recommendations are based on both observation and data gathered during the first year. (WAS)
