School Retrofit Design Analysis System. A Microcomputer Model for School Energy Use.
Canipe, Stephen Lee
The School Retrofit Design Analysis System (SRDAS) developed in this study provides a non-technical method for the school administrator to use in evaluating alternative energy saving retrofit and new construction design possibilities. By providing a high degree of flexibility, SRDAS is applicable to a wide range of school building and retrofit situations. SRDAS is a microcomputer model utilizing the Apple II microcomputer and "basic" language programming, which allows the school administrator to develop feasibility studies on various energy conservation scenarios. The ability to perform calculations needed for the administrator's credibility in discussions of possible energy plans is enhanced by using SRDAS. The ability to challenge energy vendor claims and to deal knowledgeably with engineers and architects is a feature the analysis system provides to the school manager. Several surveys and interviews are described which delineate the necessary features of an analysis system. The legal aspects, including statutes, regulations, and executive orders affecting school energy consumption and saving are described. A sample run is made using the SRDAS and the effects on the analysis of each of the subprograms are described. A complete listing of the various subprograms making up the SRDAS is provided along with the flow diagrams showing the program logic. (Author/JN)
