A guide to help identify strengths and weaknesses of study abroad programs is presented. Questions about the major components of these programs are listed, along with answers illustrating the most positive and negative responses. The components are classified under four headings: basic information, academic aspects, interaction with the host culture, and administrative aspects. Within these categories, the following areas are covered: printed materials, objectives, admission requirements, curriculum, faculty, academic resources, orientation, cross-cultural involvement, sponsoring institution or organization, program administration, affiliation with a host country institution, housing and meals, supportive services, costs, and travel arrangement. Steps in conducting an evaluation of a study abroad program are outlined, and four appendices are included that serve as worksheets for the evaluation; a total of 89 questions are asked in the evaluation process. The appendices are as follows: questions to be applied to printed materials, questions to be answered by program administrators, questions to be answered by alumni, questions to be answered by evaluations during an on-site review, and a master summary form.
