Behavior management involves both the encouragement of social behavior and the reduction of inappropriate behavior. Initially, teaching efforts should be directed at identifying socially acceptable alternatives. If these efforts are unsuccessful, additional procedures that are specifically directed at the inappropriate behavior may be warranted. Essential components of all behavior management programs include behavioral definitions, measurement procedures, reinforcement procedures, reinforcement for alternative behaviors, specific program procedures, and a mechanism for monitoring and evaluating program results. When reductive procedures are necessary, the least intrusive and most positive approach should be tried prior to considering more aversive methods. The behavior contract is highly recommended as a program component that assures student involvement and clarification of all program procedures.
