Presbyopia, a condition which affects the eye's ability to change focus or to produce a clear image, makes an appropriate analogy through which to consider educational access for special needs students. Presbyopia can be corrected with properly fitted glasses; new "glasses" should be "prescribed" for teachers so that distortions related to student ability can be eliminated and teachers can respond to all students equally. Ways of presenting instructional materials or conducting activities to provide equal education for all students include: (1) providing visual and tactile augmentation to directions and instructions; (2) using time and material resources efficiently; (3) making opportunities for meaningful peer interaction; (4) allowing students to be aware of high teacher expectancy; (5) creating a supportive classroom structure; (6) reacting positively to difficult children; (7) giving encouraging feedback; (8) maintaining physical proximity to learning disabled children when moving about the classroom; (9) offering adequate response time to slow students; and (10) listening carefully and creatively to student responses.
