Citizens Humanities Advisory Committee: Board Docket Items Establishing Committee and Minutes.
San Diego Community Coll. District, CA.
In December 1980, the formation of a Lay Committee for the Humanities was proposed to the Board of Trustees of the San Diego Community College District. The Advisory Committee, to be composed of individuals of stature in the community who are practitioners or devotees of the humanities, and faculty and administrators from the District, would consider topics such as community needs and interests related to the humanities; the scope of current humanities offerings in the District; methods of student recruitment and placement; the development of public information programs and cooperative programs with local museums, libraries, and orchestras; and fund-raising methods. In this document, the purpose, functions, composition, structure, and procedures of the Committee are set forth in the original proposal to the Board of Trustees. A series of agendas and meeting minutes follows that reflect the activities and concerns of the Advisory Committee since September 1981, when the Committee held its first meeting, through March 1983. The minutes reveal that during its early meetings, the Committee discussed and established priorities for its charges; considered procedural issues; and began establishing linkages with community organization. Minutes for subsequent meetings summarize discussions of topics including short-term courses for students and community members to precede cultural events; reduced student prices for museum visits and symphonies; and outreach to older adults.
