Transformations in Higher Education: Looking Ahead at Management Issues in the '80s.
Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co., New York, NY.
Future changes that may affect higher education and management approaches that should be used by governing boards and administrators are discussed. Population trends that will affect academic and support programs are noted, and it is suggested that a declining demand from traditional students may cause institutions to specialize in selected programs and to provide offerings and schedules to serve nontraditional students. There will be continuing shifts in governmental support of basic research, and universities and corporations may need to form partnerships for pursuing mutual research interests. In addition, technological change is providing opportunities for improved use of computers, including microcomputers and minicomputers. The following concerns are considered: using marketing for a changed mission; changing from the traditional organizational structures; strategic and operational planning; fund-raising strategies; the role of financial analysis; maximizing asset returns; cost management; federal regulations; management information needs; a changing faculty profile; strengthening top-level management; building professional administrators; effective personnel administration; benefits planning; facility planning and utilization; accounting and auditing; and the impact of taxes.
