Volunteers and Older Students. Partners for the 80's.
Purcell, Elizabeth A., Ed.; Nagle, Terry Lynn, Ed.
Information on 12 exemplary volunteer programs is gathered in this manual for school officials, teachers, and volunteer coordinators. An introductory chapter discusses the place of volunteerism in middle and secondary schools, covering categories of volunteers; the services volunteers can provide; the benefits of volunteer programs to students, professional staffs, and schools as a whole; and the special needs of secondary schools, adolescent students, and secondary teachers. The remainder of the document is divided into two parts. The first section details the major factors to consider when developing programs using students as volunteers and describes the objectives, structure, implementation, and evaluation of four programs for peer and cross-age tutoring, peer counseling, and peer leadership. The second section focuses on the work of adult volunteers with older students and describes eight programs involving career study, tutoring by adults, or the utilization of community resources or corporate volunteers. Accompanying the discussion of each program are several related exhibits including such items as sample planning, reporting, and evaluation forms, questionnaires, recruitment materials, guidelines, and sample letters.
