Laying the Groundwork for an Interdisciplinary Effort Aimed at Prevention of Pregnancy among Middle School Students. Phase IV: Revised Curriculum. Final Report. July 1981 to June 1982.
University of West Florida, Pensacola.
This revised curriculum, developed for use in Florida middle schools, is a comprehensive family life education course. The content of the course was determined (1) through a "Needs Assessment Inventory for Teenage Pregnancy Prevention," which was sent to more than 1,200 home economics teachers in Florida (and returned by the majority of them), and (2) from the original curriculum that was developed immediately following the needs assessment. The curriculum is flexible and is comprised of six themes, all of which are based on Havinghurst's developmental tasks for adolescents. The six themes are changing bodies and medical concerns, values clarification, decision making, family relationships, interpersonal relationships, and role development. Each theme is self contained and consists of individual lesson plans. Each lesson plan includes notes to the teacher that suggest ways of teaching the lesson and extensive background information needed to teach the lesson. The remainder of the lesson plans follows a traditional format, including goals, objectives, generalizations, learning activities, and evaluation. Learning activities are independent of each other to allow freedom of choice. Illustrations suitable for use as transparency masters and student activity sheets are included in the plans. The revised curriculum guide also contains a glossary, expanded references, bibliography, additional evaluation activities, and the assessment instrument used to gather information on educational needs.
