This report summarizes research performed at the Universtiy of Kansas that involved several topics related to reading and learning to read, including the development of automatic word recognition processes, reading for comprehension, and the development of new computer technologies designed to facilitate the reading process. The first section explains how the development of automatic word recognition as a function of reading skill was investigated in seven experiments using Stroop-like tasks. It describes a longitudinal study of the development of automatic word recognition and how this skill is used by adults. It comments on the semantics effects in the development of this skill and examines the dimensions of lexical coding in Chinese and English. The second section reports on studies that examined the comprehension of brief passages, especially the forward and backward search processes in sentence integration. The third section reports on studies that present text in a rapid, serial, visual presentation format. The section emphasises (1) visual search and the reading of rapid, serial presentations of letter strings, words, and text; (2) such reading with and without eye movements; and (3) the role of comprehension and memory in reading rapid, serial presentations of text.
