This self-instructional library module is the textbook used in a 4-hour library instruction course for field-based students of the National College of Education. The field program involves instruction sessions in local libraries, instructor-assisted online reference searching, and document delivery to field-based students working on a comprehensive research paper. The first part of the module itself includes an introduction; a schedule of activities; a glossary of terms; an outline of the library research process; a discussion of choosing a local library for research; a list of Chicago-area libraries with notations as to availability of ERIC microfiche and government document collections; and guidelines on using the library, the general search process, online computer searches, and manual searches for information in books, the journal literature, and ERIC documents. The second part of the manual provides an annotated listing of 47 basic library reference tools including sources of general, business, education, funding, grant, nursing, and social science information.
