This introductory guide to basic library research tools in the field of criminal justice was compiled for use by students at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice as part of the Library Instruction Program. Included are chapters on devising a search strategy; the use of the card catalog; encyclopedia and dictionaries; indexes and abstracts; newspapers and newsletters; governmental and non-governmental documents and reports, particularly major national commission reports; statistics; directories; bibliographies; the use of legal material including law books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodical indexes, and sources of U.S. federal and New York state law; and computer searching. A selective annotated bibliography is provided for each type of secondary source material. The final chapter describes primary sources for the study of criminal justice in the John Jay Library.
