A Learner Directed Approach to Maniyaka. A Handbook on Communication and Culture with Dialogs, Texts, Cultural Notes, Exercises, Drills and Instructions.
Cutler, Sue A.; Talawoley, Abu Varflai
This book, designed as a combined teacher's manual and text, presents 20 lessons in Maniyaka (Mandingo), a language spoken in Liberia. It represents about 300 hours of study and is the equivalent of a first year college language course. Each lesson is divided into three sections: texts, grammar exercises and cultural information, and suggestions for self study. The text section contains both monologues and dialogues with an emphasis on receptive skill development, vocabulary, and cultural information. In the second section grammar explanations are provided and Mandingo usages are compared with English. Drills, illustrations, supplemental vocabulary, and cultural notes are also included. The third section is designed for the learner who is living in a Mandingo speaking area and provides non-classroom type activities and written exercises. A short introduction on how to use the book precedes the lessons. (AMH)
