Refugees and Sponsorship.
Tenhula, John, Ed.
This booklet describes the refugee resettlement activities of Church World Service (CWS), and explains the process of refugee sponsorship that constitute a major CWS concern. CWS is a cooperative organization of churches that serve as the relief and development arm of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. The booklet reviews the development of the Immigration and Refugee Program of CWS; summarizes the resettlement program under which refugees from several countries were permitted to enter the United States since the end of World War II; describes the organizational structure and functional network of the CWS refugee program; and discusses the basic responsibilities of the sponsor in providing necessary support for refugees until they can provide for their own needs. Individuals or groups may become sponsors, and sponsorship responsibilities include helping refugees obtain employment and the skills necessary for employment; soliciting donations of goods and services; making housing arrangements; and helping refugees adjust to their new environment. The report further discusses the financial and organizational aspects of sponsorship and explores the theological basis for refugee concerns. A list of persons who may be contacted for information and assistance concerning refugee sponsorship is included. (Author/MJL)
