Social Studies Program [Grade] 6.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of General Education Curriculum Development.
This sixth-grade level social studies framework is intended to help teachers develop programs best suited to their students' needs. There are two main sections to the guide: a teacher notebook and a syllabus. The teacher notebook elaborates on the key features of the program, suggesting relevant classroom applications. Discussed are concept and skill goals, student evaluation, linking literature to social studies, developing citizenship competency, and developing participation projects. A teacher self-checklist for classroom climate is also included. The syllabus begins with a grade level overview. The course of study in the sixth grade emphasizes the interdependence of all people, keying on Western and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The emphases of many of the lessons and activities for this grade level draw on specific examples of these two geo-cultural regions. This overview is followed by generalizations for the K-6 program. A key to symbols used in the syllabus to encourage interdisciplinary planning and a holistic view of classroom instruction is provided. The final section of the syllabus includes the following for each concept taught in grade 6: course content, learning activities, skills and attitudes, evaluation procedures, and resource materials.
