Developed during the course of the North Dakota Pioneers in Equality Project and originally used in a series of regional workshops for vocational teachers and school administrators, this handbook deals with ways in which vocational educators can help to eliminate sex role and occupational stereotyping. It consists of a series of 11 chapters devoted to various aspects of sex stereotyping and its elimination as well as various lists of resources for use in eliminating sex role stereotyping. Included in the handbook are discussions of the following topics: real life events and philosophical guidelines that help expand sex roles; the difference between bias, stereotyping, and discrimination; the relationship between sex identity, individual characteristics, and the world of work; the effects of sex bias and stereotyping of men; sexism in language and textbooks; ways to build trust between the sexes and expand career horizons; activities to aid in the recognition of sex role stereotyping behavior in children; the effect of sex differences on attitudes and aspirations; and behavior patterns that affect the success of men and women in their chosen professions.
