This set of materials on the employment status of librarians in research libraries, assembled by the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), contains: (1) the results of a survey of ARL member libraries conducted in December 1979 on the employment status of librarians; (2) policy statements on the appointment, promotion, and tenure of librarians at the University of Chicago, the University of Iowa, the University of Rochester, Pennsylvania State University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Indiana University; (3) detailed descriptions of the classification structures and policies for ranking librarians at the University of North Carolina and the University of British Columbia; and (4) the by-laws of the library faculty at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Michigan State University.
