Determining Educational Needs of AFL-CIO Union Members in Southeast Florida. A Report to the Board of Directors of the Southeast Florida Educational Consortium.
Meinhold, Robert W.
Educational needs of AFL-CIO union members in southeast Florida were surveyed. Of the two union locals surveyed in Dade and Broward counties, 424 questionnaire responses were received. Findings include the following: 86.3 percent were not attending a college or university; 62.5 percent would have three hours or more on the weekend to devote to learning; 72.9 percent would have three hours or more to devote to learning during the work week; 20.8 percent rated "improving general knowledge" as the number one reason for learning; 36.6 rated "learning to communicate" as the number one reason for learning; 39.4l percent rated "learning about the business you work in" as the number one reason; only 5.7 percent had not completed high school; and 65.8 percent wanted to obtain a degree. Information is also presented on academic areas of interest; physical location of classes; and age and sex of respondents. Based on the survey results, it is recommended that a four-year degree program be developed that emphasizes business, personal relations, data processing, writing skills, and electronics. The classes would be offered in smaller blocks than those for the traditional full-time attending student, and courses would be offered through a combination of on-campus, independent study, and television and radio programs. A bibliography and questionnaire are appended. (SW)
