The Block Plan. Grade Seven Instructional Manual.
Sigurdson, Sol E., Ed.; And Others
This manual illustrates an interdisciplinary team approach to teaching four academic subjects for seventh grade students. Eight interdisciplinary units are presented that were developed by teachers around two or more of the following subject areas: language arts, social studies, science, and mathematics. An introduction to the Block Plan, as it was implemented by the Edmonton Public School Board (Alberta, Canada), describes it as a cooperative effort between two teachers who have the option of flexible scheduling for four 40-minute class periods per day. Instruction time for each unit is a maximum of four weeks. Each unit includes a teacher's manual and a student handbook. The teacher's manual covers the rationale and philosophy behind the unit and discusses the unit exercises, while the student handbook consists of materials that can be duplicated for student use and reference. The eight units and their subject areas are: (1) The Beaver (science and language arts); (2) Dairy Farming (science, mathematics, and language arts); (3) Disasters (social studies, science, and language arts); (4) Multiculturalism (social studies and language arts); (5) Plants--Rate, Ratio, and Percentage (science and mathematics); (6) Library Research Reporting Skills (language arts, social studies, and science); (7) Wheat Farming in Western Canada (social studies, language arts, and science); and (8) Who Am I (social studies and language arts).
