An international study of adaptation and coping of students, faculty, and administrators involved with foreign student exchange is examined using data obtained in 11 countries--Brazil, Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Japan, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The following are included: methodological considerations; the characteristics and perceptions of the student population; interviews with foreign students about the problems and difficulties experienced; the problems of personal interactions and friendships; national and ethnic relations; consequences of the sojourn; an analysis of case studies on the process of coping; the "U-Curve" hypothesis; national profiles; and international relationships. Several conclusions were reported such as students from the Latin American countries being the most likely to report their perceptions at one extreme or another, and those from Arabic-speaking countries most likely to report most of their contact with other Arabic-speaking students. The factors most important with regard to coping were: (1) social contact with those local to the sojourn culture and area, and (2) prior foreign experience as evidenced by previous travel. It is suggested that adequate information about the foreign student and the host institution is a requirement if the adjustment is to be made, as well as recognition of the possible problems that are sometimes automatic in a foreign exchange.
