The Classroom Interaction Analysis Index (CIAI) is an instrument developed to categorize the actions of teachers and students as they interact in classroom situations. In the study described, a class of 30 social studies student teachers were divided into teams of five each. Each team taught the same preplanned lesson twice--by illustrated lecture and through a non-expository method. The lessons were video-taped and, utilizing the CIAI, evaluated by five evaluators: self, peers, an untrained graduate observer, a trained graduate observer, and by the senior researcher. The researchers used analysis of variance to compare the perceptions of the five evaluators, Duncan's Multiple Range Test to determine where the differences occurred, and the t-test to determine if there were significant differences in the perceived behaviors when expository and non-expository methods were used.
