The collection of competency goals and performance indicators is designed to assist regular and special educators in creating curriculum and instructional programs to maximize the learning potential of educable mentally retarded students. The competency goals and performance indicators are identified in most program areas by grade level categories (K through 3, 4 through 6, 7 through 9, and 10 through 12) and significant secondary level courses. Program areas covered include the following (sample subareas are in parentheses): healthful living (health, physical education, safety); languages (writing, speaking, listening); mathematics; reading (prereading skills, comprehension, word analysis, study skills, vocabulary); science; social studies; and vocational education.
