Between 1965-1972, a total of 150 Michigan farmers participated in the 3-year Kellogg Farmers Study Program, a model for leadership development established at Michigan State University. Participants were selected primarily on the basis of their demonstrated interest in community affairs and their potential leadership abilities. The liberal arts curriculum was designed to increase the participants' understanding of the social, economic, and political framework within which modern agriculture functions and to use that framework in analyzing local, state, national, and international issues. Each year of the program was designed to reflect a balance of rigorous inquiry through reading, lectures, discussions, interviews, and observation. Farmers spent three weeks together in study-discussion institutes each year. Wives were included in a summer institute at the end of each year. A 1-week state travel seminar was part of the first year's 21-24 day schedule. Participants went on a 2-week national travel tour as part of the second year's 30-33 day program. In the third year, participants attended the program for eight to nine weeks which included a three to five week international travel seminar. The program was successful, and its objectives and methodology were utilized by projects in other areas. Appendices include pertinent information and forms. (CM)
