This participant manual is designed to assist substance abuse prevention specialists in the development of knowledge and skills in implementing community-based programs through an entry-level course. The manual initially concentrates on a basic, generic approach to community work, and reviews course goals and objectives. The nine training modules are detailed in terms of goals, objectives, required materials, exercises, and activities. Figures, worksheets, supplementary materials, and references are provided, along with selected readings and bibliographies. The course materials focus on prevention strategies, knowledge of the community, the development of community support, implementation techniques, and burnout.
