Northern Kentucky University has implemented a proficiency testing program to screen candidates for admission to the teacher education program. When students are at the sophomore level, four tests are administered: (1) reading proficiency, measured by the Iowa Silent Reading Test; (2) writing proficiency; (3) speech and listening proficiency; and (4) psychological testing of personality characteristics and academic-vocational interests, using the 16 PF, Gordon Personal Profile, Gordon Personal Inventory, and the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory. Unsatisfactory ratings in the reading, writing, or speech categories require that the student demonstrate interest in remedial work to achieve at least a minimum competency level. If students have unsatisfactory ratings in the psychological tests, they can retest on the same or different tests, and career counseling is advised. The successful implementation of admissions testing requires university-wide commitment, the provision of adequate staff and remedial services, and the establishment of due process for the protection of students and the university. A significant decline in enrollment in the teacher education program is expected. (FG)
